The Great Annual Wildebeest Migration Safari 2012 in Masai Mara

Kenya - Masai Mara Migration 2012 - The Ultimate Wildlife Experience

This is a remarkable phenomena and certainly one the leading wildlife attractions and a good reason to visit Masai Mara, Kenya between July and October. The migration herds cross in from Serengeti between late June and Mid July. The specific time from the famous Mara River crossing cannot be easily predicted. There are many natural factors that determine the animal movements, but the said dates are close the reality that has been over the years.

What is a Masai Mara Migration Safari Outstanding?

The sheer population of herbivores make predators smile, plenty to eat and spare. During the non-migration months, lions mostly hunt in groups targeting the difficult buffalo. Rest of the time becomes easy since the hunted are all over the place. There is nothing more exhilarating than watching a live hunting drama in the Mara.

How to Book a Masai Mara Migration Safari

July to October is Masai Mara's peak season. Hotels, lodges and camps are busy and it is always critical to book early. There is no guarantee for accommodation in the last minute. Even though the river crossing is one the most filmed and photographed event in wildlife drama, the lodges overflow and congestion is sure. Accommodation in the Greater Mara areas and the surrounding conservancies means double payments for park fees. Since the migration herds overflow to these conservancies, the choice is to be there or pay to cross into the 'main' Mara.

Migration Safari in the Mara Triangle

The Mara Triangle is home to herds in Mid-July to Mid-August. After this time they are spread over a large area including neighbouring conservancies to the North & North East of the Greater Mara. Prices for Lodges and camps in this area are a bit steep and the choice is to do 'raw' camping by the banks of the Mara on private camp sites. There are seven scenic private campsites. One public camp site is just near the Ololoolo Gate. You will often find the scenic private campsites fully booked sometimes as early as January and February.
